A Comprehensive Program for Coping with the Emotional Effects of Chronic and Catastrophic Illness
Prepared for the Road Ahead is a program for individuals recently diagnosed with chronic and catastrophic medical conditions to help them deal with the emotional impact of their diagnosis as a means of being better prepared for making treatment decisions as well as managing their condition in the future.
Prepared for the Road Ahead is focused on emotions, self-image, and spirituality. Components of the program include:
- Looking Inward — acknowledging and experiencing emotions around the diagnosis, including fear, disappointment, and anger
- Looking Outward — understanding how the diagnosis affects other people and obtaining needed support
- Looking Upward — Making a spiritual connection, beginning with the principals of compassion for one’s self and others
- Looking Forward — Creating a realistic vision for the future and establishing goals
Prepared for the Road Ahead includes:
- Group and individual counseling services for patients and caregivers
- Educational workshops and seminars for patients and caregivers
- Continuing education courses for healthcare professionals
